Description: Power generation is the first phase of the power supply chain and the operations of power generation companies (GenCos) are critical to the existence of the entire supply chain. The unbundling and privatization of the Nigerian power sector saw the birth of six successor generation companies (Successor GenCos). In addition to the Successor GenCos, there are several on-grid Independent Power Plants (IPP) and the 10 thermal power plants built under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP). Together, these GenCos have an installed generation capacity of over 13,000 MW.

Objectives: This award category seeks to recognize generation companies who have demonstrated excellence, improvements and optimum efficiency during the period under consideration in the following areas:

Thermal Power Generation Company of the Year

  • Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Nominees must demonstrate sustained or improved generation capacity. Nominees should also demonstrate investments in capacity recovery and/ or additional generation capacity.
  2. Nominees must demonstrate efforts at improving technical efficiency i.e. reducing the discrepancy between installed capacity and generated power output, plant availability, the reliability, the capacity factor, and the thermal efficiency of the plant, outage factors (planned and forced outages), total electrical energy sent out, etc. Nominees must also demonstrate implementation of regular and scheduled maintenance programmes for their plants in other to sustain generation capacity.
  3. Nominees must demonstrate efforts at curbing gas constraints.
  4. Nominees must demonstrate initiatives to ensure optimum evacuation of power from their plants.
  5. Nominees must demonstrate initiatives to reduce environmental pollution from their plants.
  6. Nominees must demonstrate commitment to improving Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in their operations.
  7. Nominees must demonstrate CSR initiatives and impact within their host communities.

Hydro Power Generation Company of the Year

  • Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Nominees must demonstrate sustained or improved generation capacity. Nominees should also demonstrate investments in capacity recovery and/ or additional generation capacity.
  2. Nominees must demonstrate efforts at improving technical efficiency i.e. reducing discrepancy between installed capacity and generated power output, plant availability, the reliability, the capacity factor, and the efficiency of the plant, outage factors (planned and forced outages), total electrical energy sent out, efficient water management, etc
  3. Nominees must demonstrate initiatives to ensure optimum evacuation of power.
  4. Nominees must demonstrate significant contribution to total power generated on-grid.
  5. Nominees must demonstrate significant contribution to address social and environmental issues arising from the operations of their plants.
  6. Nominees must demonstrate commitment to improving Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in their operations.
  7. Nominees must demonstrate CSR initiatives and impact within their host communities

Most Gender Diverse Generation Company of the Year

Objectives: This award category is designed to recognize and reward power generation companies taking active steps to break the bias by promoting female leadership and gender inclusion in the power generation sub sector.

  • Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Nominees must demonstrate gender diversity initiatives
  2. Nominees must demonstrate the impact of gender diversity initiatives on their organisational and business growth
  3. Nominees must demonstrate a high ratio of female participation in senior technical and management positions in the period under review
